24 April 2018 / Published in BusinessAfter many years of hard work being employed by other companies, Auckland plumber Royce Mitchell decided to strike out on his own and start GoFlo Plumbers. He spoke to us about how Plus by ASB has helped in the running of his business.
Tell us a bit about your business and how you got started.
I began my career as a plumber with an apprenticeship when I was 19 years old. It was hard work and not great money back in those days, but the ultimate goal was always to have my own business. After being employed as a plumber for 14 years and now with a young family, I decided that the time was right to head out on my own. That was two years ago, and I haven’t looked back.
What attracted you to the industry?
After leaving school I didn’t really have a clear career path in mind. An opportunity came up to work with a plumber and get a feel for the job - it was definitely the right fit for me. I enjoy working with people, the challenges of the job, and ultimately keeping my clients happy.
What is the best thing about owning your own business?
I would have to say that the best thing about owning my own business has been the flexibility it has afforded my family. I have two young children and love being able to spend more quality time with them and help the wife out! Of course, I do love the work as well, particularly the clients that I have grown to know and the repeat business that has come from this.
What are some of the challenges you’ve encountered operating a small business in NZ?
Fortunately for me, GoFlo Plumbers took off really quickly and I’ve had no shortage of work. However, there was a bit of fear in the back of my mind and before setting out on my own I had to really consider this move carefully. Initial start-up costs can be massive and getting my head around small business accounting was daunting at first.
What online business tools do you use?
I use Xero accounting software and various plumbing apps to keep me up to date. The ASB online banking tools have also been invaluable.
What made you decide to use Plus?
I always like to keep up to date with the latest software that can enhance my business, and I like the way Plus links with Xero to give me accurate and up to date information on my business finances.
How has Plus supported you?
I mainly use Plus on my mobile and its part of my daily office routine. I like the way I can quickly scroll through screens to see up to date account information. It is quick and easy to use, and anything that saves me time in the office has got to be good!
Where to from here?
I would like to continue to grow my business while also ensuring that high standards of workmanship are always maintained. Ultimately, the business will expand, that’s the next challenge!
What advice do you have for other Kiwi businesses wanting to succeed?
Work hard, get your name out there, get a good reputation and it should be sweet sailing from there!
