What’s on at the 2019 Auckland Lantern Festival

Join us at the 2019 Auckland Lantern Festival and welcome in the Year of the Pig. 

From Thursday 14 – Sunday 17 February, the Auckland Domain will be illuminated with over 800 homemade Chinese lanterns in celebration of Chinese Lunar New Year.

We’re there for our 7th year and creating a whole new experience, for the first time the ASB Lantern Garden will be open to everyone attending the festival. Bring your friends and family along and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere, food stalls, art, traditional Chinese on-stage performances and more.

Here’s what you can expect from the ASB Lantern Garden.

Giant Kaleidoscope

We’ve taken the humble kaleidoscope and supersized it, creating an exciting visual experience for all ages. Our kaleidoscopes allows users to spin wheels and then using light and mirrors, creates beautiful, fascinating patterns. 

Inaugural transformation of historical band rotunda  

We’re creating history by turning the historic Auckland Domain rotunda into an interactive lantern.

Onlookers will be captivated as images from the giant kaleidoscopes are projected onto the specially built rotunda lantern walls. Instagram-lovers can enjoy using the kaleidoscopes as a projector and illuminate the lantern with their own image – hundreds of times.

ASB Silent Disco

For all the young and young at heart, the ASB Cube will be turned into a Silent Disco of epic proportions. The three music channels will have something for everyone to enjoy.  One channel will be playing Chinese music, the other 80s music and the third, Top 40 songs. 

Lantern Garden

Scattered throughout our garden are brightly glowing orbs and light skewers created by Angus Muir Designs. 

Performance Stage

We’ll have free live performances to enjoy throughout the night including traditional lion dance, musicians, singers, dancers and a Diablo juggling show by on our special ASB performance stage.  

ASB Lantern Forum

As part of this year’s festival, ASB is co-sponsoring the ASB Lantern Forum. This is an exclusive event bringing together migrant investors and influential business people in the Chinese and business community to discuss topics affecting the migration flows out of China.
