Be Cyber Smart with Netcode
14 October 2019 / Published in Your MoneyIt’s Cyber Smart Week, so get ready to hear a whole lot about staying safe online and two-factor authentication. “But how do I keep safe when it comes to my banking?” we hear you ask. Well, we’ve got heaps of tips right here, but the first step to giving your FastNet Classic internet banking an extra layer of protection: Netcode.
Netcode? What’s that?
Good question! Netcode is an extra layer of security that double checks it’s really you when completing certain banking activities online, and when logging in to your FastNet Classic internet banking. It's a randomly created eight-digit code that we TXT to your mobile phone or send to you on a portable Netcode token.
When do I use Netcode?
Netcode makes sure that no more than $1,000 a day can leave your account without your permission, as a safeguard to protect you from fraudsters. You can make payments over this limit: we’ll immediately send you a Netcode that you can enter to allow the payment. There are certain payments that won’t require Netcode – find them here.
You’ll also need Netcode when you register for the ASB Mobile Banking app, and for international money transfers.
What is ‘Netcode at login’?
Netcode at login takes your security one step further, adding an extra layer of protection. It’s a simple and effective way to make sure that you and only you can log in to FastNet Classic internet banking on your account. You don’t need Netcode at login to get into the ASB Mobile Banking app.
You’ll still use your username and password as normal, but you’ll also enter the Netcode from your TXT message or token. Once logged in, you may need another Netcode for other banking activities.
To turn on ‘Netcode at login’:
- Log in to FastNet Classic internet banking.
- Select your Profile in the top right-hand corner.
- Click ‘Netcode at login’, select Yes and Submit.
How do I register for Netcode?
It’s free and easy. Either:
- Call us on 0800 FASTNET (0800 327 863) and select option 2
- Or visit any ASB branch
Overseas? You can reach us on + 64 9 306 3000. All you need is a mobile phone number. Learn more about Netcode on a foreign phone and using Netcode from overseas.
We’ll ask you some security questions (and for your ‘verbal’ password) to establish it is really you, but we’ll never ask you for your FastNet Classic password or any PIN numbers.
Can I lower the daily Netcode limit?
Sure can, here’s how:
- Log in to FastNet Classic internet banking.
- Go to your Profile in the top right-hand corner.
- Choose 'Set Netcode Limit'.
- Enter your new limit.
- Click 'Send to ASB'.
Can I stop Netcode?
We don’t even know why you’d want to (!) but sure – just reply STOP to any Netcode TXT message. Your mobile provider may charge you for the text as normal mobile charges will apply. If you ever change your mind, just register again.
Remember, if you choose not to use Netcode, you’ll need to call 0800 FASTNET (0800 327 863) to identify yourself and release payments whenever you make transactions that take you over your daily Netcode limit of $1,000. And, you may not be able to complete some other banking activities such as International Money Transfers.
