I’m being asked to install an update to enable access to Near Field Communication (NFC) on my Android device, is this safe?

Yes it is safe, by accepting the permissions there will be no changes to your phone.
Once you agree to install the update you will see this screen. Select ACCEPT to begin the install the update.
After the app has updated if you select the app permissions link at the bottom of the Google Play Store page, you will see this screen confirming the update.
