What is the primary market for bonds?

Last Updated: 21 Mar 2017

The primary market is where the Government or a company originally issues the bonds. In many cases, an initial issue is offered through a prospectus and investment statement (called ‘offer documents’). Terms of the sale are set out in the offer documents along with a complete description of the issuer and a range of associated statutory information that is required by law.

The secondary market is where you are purchasing bonds previously issued. This makes up the main market for bonds.
