How we can help

For teens

You've got the bank account. Now what?

Now is the best time to create good money habits. To set goals that set you up for the future.

Whether you have your first part-time job and want some tips for not spending all your pay, wondering what's worth saving for, or how to make sure you don't get scammed, we have all the info right here.

And if there's a question we haven't answered, you can get in touch with us or ask a parent.

For parents

We get it, managing money is a big responsibility for your teen. Consider us a team, we're here to support with any questions you or your teen may have.

Our job is to provide the products, tools and know-how to help your teen feel supported and empowered to manage their money. It's never too late - or early - to learn good money habits, and we want to help set your teen up for success.

How to set up good money habits

Step 1: Open your account

Setting up your own finances is a big deal, so remember to answer all questions honestly, especially the tax stuff.

If you've lived and worked overseas at any point, or you're a citizen of another country, the tax stuff can be a bit confusing. Get your parent to help, or book an appointment to come into an Advice Centre.

Step 2: Confirm you're you

We're required by law to check that you’re who you say you are. That's why we need proof of your identity and address. You can provide this in the ASB ID app, or book an appointment to come into an Advice Centre with your documents.

A birth certificate, passport or a NZ driver licence (if you have one) works best for your identity. A letter addressed to you from the IRD or your school can work for your address.

How to verify

Step 3: Grow your bank balance

Now you've got a bank account, you probably want to put some money in it. Whether you have a part-time job, pocket money or the odd coin, it all adds up.

Get in the habit of putting money into your account, and watch it grow with interest earned on every dollar.

"I never share my personal details or account information with anyone. This is a good way to protect my money, so that nobody can access my account."

Charlie (15 years)

"I like that you can set a PIN/passcode to enter the app. And it’s super easy to transfer money."

Jess (17 years)

"Save money by making your coffee at home. $3-$5 per coffee can add up quickly. By having your morning coffee at home, you’ll save about $100 every month. That’s $1,200 a year!"

Vernon (16 years)

"I like that I can check my balance and that I get alerts. This gives me a good reminder of how much money I have left to spend."

Izy (16 years) & Malia (15 years)

"Our savings tip is you shop with your eyes first, and then only get what you actually need...or just not to go to the store at all and avoid the temptation."
